Topic: Water Hammer

Water hammer in taps is a loud banging or knocking noise that occurs in your plumbing system when water flow is suddenly stopped or changed. It’s caused by a shockwave created when moving water hits a closed valve or a sudden restriction in the pipe.

🔍 What Causes Water Hammer?

  1. Fast-Closing Valves:
    • Taps or appliances that shut off water quickly (like mixer taps or washing machines) can trigger water hammer.
  2. High Water Pressure:
    • Excessive pressure increases the force of water flow, making the shockwave more intense.
  3. Loose or Poorly Secured Pipes:
    • Pipes that aren’t properly clipped or supported can move and bang against walls or joists.
  4. Lack of Air Chambers or Arrestors:
    • Older systems may lack devices that absorb the shock of moving water.

🛠️ How to Fix It

  • Install a water hammer arrestor near the affected tap or appliance.
  • Secure loose pipes with proper brackets or clips.
  • Reduce water pressure using a pressure-reducing valve (PRV).
  • Drain the system to restore air cushions in older plumbing setups.
  • Replace faulty or fast-closing tap cartridges.
