Topic: Water Hammer
Water hammer in taps is a loud banging or knocking noise that occurs in your plumbing system when water flow is suddenly stopped or changed. It’s caused by a shockwave created when moving water hits a closed valve or a sudden restriction in the pipe.
🔍 What Causes Water Hammer?
- Fast-Closing Valves:
- Taps or appliances that shut off water quickly (like mixer taps or washing machines) can trigger water hammer.
- High Water Pressure:
- Excessive pressure increases the force of water flow, making the shockwave more intense.
- Loose or Poorly Secured Pipes:
- Pipes that aren’t properly clipped or supported can move and bang against walls or joists.
- Lack of Air Chambers or Arrestors:
- Older systems may lack devices that absorb the shock of moving water.
🛠️ How to Fix It
- Install a water hammer arrestor near the affected tap or appliance.
- Secure loose pipes with proper brackets or clips.
- Reduce water pressure using a pressure-reducing valve (PRV).
- Drain the system to restore air cushions in older plumbing setups.
- Replace faulty or fast-closing tap cartridges.
